Despite its inland location, Crescent Lake National Wildlife Refuge is known for sand dunes and marshlands. This NWR comprises over 45,000 acres and contains the largest continuous sand dune area in the United States. The area also has numerous lakes that makes it an attractive spot for migrating birds. At the height of the fall migration there may be over 200,000 waterfowl at Crescent Lake. The refuge is in the rather remote western part of Nebraska, about 120 miles from North Platte.
