Virginia Beach is one of the most popular summertime resort destinations in the U.S. mid-Atlantic region. Dozens of large resort hotels line the beachfront along the boardwalk (a misnomer in this case since the boardwalk is mostly concrete). You'll also find a large number of beachfront (and near-the-beach) homes in the less-crowded Croatan and Sandbridge areas south of the resort strip.

However, Virginia Beach is much more than a resort town - it's home to several military bases and tens of thousands of military personnel. The city is the size of a county (most of it was once known as Princess Anne County), so if you're visiting to go to the beach make sure you pick a place to stay that's near the ocean.

Cape Henry, where the Chesapeake Bay meets the Atlantic Ocean, is where you'll find First Landing State Park commemorating the initial landing point of the Jamestown colonists. False Cape State Park is located at the southeastern corner of the city, along the barrier island bordering North Carolina. The city is also the home of Pat Robertson's CBN and Regent University.
