Rochester is New York’s third-largest city, at the center of a metropolitan area of a little over 1,000,000. It is located on the southern side of Lake Ontario in northwestern New York. In the 18th century the city benefited from the arrival of immigrants George Eastman, John Jacob Bausch and Henry Lomb, who created Kodak and Bausch & Lomb. It’s still something of a high-tech center, thanks in part to the University of Rochester and the Rochester Institute of Technology.

It gets cold up here in the winter, with a handful of zero degree days and over 100 inches of snow expected annually. Rochester is about mid-way between Buffalo and Syracuse, connected to both by the New York State Thruway (I-90).
