Featured City: Buffalo
As the second largest city in the state, Buffalo is essentially the capital of western New York. Buffalo began as a trading post in the late 18th century and experienced its greatest boom times between the opening of the Erie Canal in 1825 and when the canal was superceded by the Saint Lawrence Seaway in 1959. While it struggled through the second half of the 20th century, Buffalo is still the educational and economic heart of the region. Its location near the US/Canada border makes it one of the busiest crossing points between the two countries. The wonders of Niagara Falls are only 20 miles from downtown Buffalo and Toronto is only a 2 hour drive to the north. Fall and winter are when Buffalonians get to enjoy "major league" sports as the Buffalo Bills of the NFL and the NHL's Buffalo Sabres make the harsh winters a lot more bearable.
Crystal Symphony Makeover
The award-winning Crystal Symphony cruise ship emerged last week from a $20 million renovation. Improvements include 48 new PURE hypoallergenic luxury staterooms and an outdoor "Fitness Garden" on 3 decks. The spa, casino, and Crystal Plaza main lobby are new designs. On October 28th the ship offers a cruise from San Diego to Auckland (New Zealand). The 15-day Trans-Pacific cruise includes a stop in Hawaii.
