Map of stations opening in Phase I of the Metro Silver Line projectThe Washington DC Metro rail system gets a major expansion later this month when the first five stations open on the new Silver Line on July 26, 2014.  While the number of miles covered by “Phase I” of the Silver Line isn’t enormous, it’s a big deal because it means the system will now be directly connected to the big Tysons Corner area in Northern Virginia.

Four of the five new stations are located in Tysons Corner: the McLean Metro Station, the Tysons Corner Metro Station (between the two malls), the Greensboro Metro Station and the Spring Hill Metro Station.  The Greensboro and Spring Hill stations are in the middle of Leesburg Pike – anyone who regularly drives through the area will be very glad to see this project completed.

The Silver Line is a key part of plans to make travel along the Dulles Access Road corridor a bit easier.  The fifth station opening as part of Phase I is the Wiehle-Reston East Metro Station, several miles west of Tysons Corner at the eastern edge of the town of Reston.  The station is in the median of the Dulles Access Road, which will be the path followed by the remainder of the planned stations that will end at Dulles International Airport.  Phase II is currently scheduled for completion in 2018.
